Lar Carpenteri Gibbon Community Conservation Project

PRCF Thailand builds the capacities of communities to engage in conservation.  Through our Lar Carpenteri Gibbon project, we provide local communities with research training to monitor the Gibbon population.  We also support community action planning for forest conservation.

Research Training

We have provided training to staff of the local WISE and KESAN foundations based on best practices for gibbon research. This training supports local engagement in gibbon research and subsequent conservation planning and implementation.

Through WISE Foundation, we have conducted gibbon research in ten local villages and began dialogue with the local community about removing threats to gibbon survival.

Community action planning

We equip communities with the tools to engage in conservation action planning by training local leaders and facilitating meetings. In community-led action planning, villagers themselves determine the steps they will take to engage in conservation.

PRCF Thailand has thus far supported eight village communities in action planning for conservation of Lar Carpenteri Gibbon. The goal is to ensure a viable population of this gibbon species in the landscape within the next five to ten years.

Mission Statement

PRCF Thailand seeks to promote the conservation of biodiversity and natural resources through direct community involvement. We do so based on researched needs and opportunities, and we pursue solutions that strengthen civil society organizations and involve local communities in conservation management.
