PRCF Thailand helps protect the endangered Lar Carpenteri Gibbon and its habitat, and assists with documentation of cultural affinities with the species.
Lar Gibbon
Globally, all gibbons are threatened by extinction and considered to be endangered species. PRCF Thailand focuses on protecting the Lar Carpenteri Gibbon in the landscape of Ob Laung National Park. PRCF Thailand trains and builds the capacity of the local Karen communities to engage in gibbon conservation work. Conservation efforts include protecting gibbon habitat and food sources, in addition to promoting awareness for gibbon conservation.

“When one gibbon dies in the forest, seven forests become silent.”
-Saying of the local Karen community
Cultural values
PRCF Thailand helps document cultural values of Karen communities in Thailand, as these pertain to conservation of the Lar Carpenteri Gibbon. Our goal is to support local people in conservation while maintaining their cultural identify. To this end, we listen to the different communities’ beliefs and seek to understand their views on conservation of the species and its habitat. We tailor our programs to meet the needs of the people and those of the endangered primate species.
